Advancing research
together.

Story

SWISSUbase has evolved from a collaborative initiative in 2019 into a national platform, gradually expanding to serve various research disciplines, including social sciences, linguistics, and the humanities.

2019

SWISSUbase was born through a collaborative response from FORS, UNIL & UZH to swissuniversities’ call for a national platform for sharing and preserving research data.

2021

SWISSUbase is launched as the primary national repository for social sciences data, with FORS serving Swiss researchers for data support and curation.

2022

The Language Repository of Switzerland (LaRS) launches, providing national data support and curation for linguistics researchers.

2023

SWISSUbase expands its reach, with roll-out to the University of Lausanne and with the University of Neuchâtel joining.

2024

Integration of the humanities through DaSCH marks a significant step forward, providing nationwide data support and curation for humanities researchers.

2025

SWISSUbase entered a phase of maturity, refining its platform, policies and contracts to ensure stability, sustainability, and trusted long-term data preservation.

Introducing SWISSUbase – an online platform and services provided by a Consortium of FORS (Swiss Centre of Expertise for the Social Sciences) and the Universities of Neuchâtel, and Zurich. We operate under a “Simple Society” agreement, combining resources and expertise to ensure the platform’s continuous operation and growth.

In 2023, we expanded our Consortium to include non-higher education institutions through Collaborating Partner agreements. We welcomed DaSCH as our first Collaborating Partner in 2024, demonstrating our commitment to fostering collaboration across various academic landscapes.

At SWISSUbase, we prioritize flexibility, allowing Consortium members and Collaborating Partners to adapt policies and practices to their local contexts. We uphold universal guiding principles to ensure compliance with national legal requirements and international data standards.

Join us at SWISSUbase in enhancing research accessibility and fostering innovation – where expertise and collaboration drive progress.

Governance

Our governance structure operates at three levels, with representatives from all Consortium member institutions. The highest level is the Oversight Board, followed by the Steering Committee. Daily operations and management are handled by the SWISSUbase Management Team.
